What is the International School of Multimedia Journalism?
The International School of Multimedia Journalism is a joint program, that networks Austrian, Danish, Georgian and Ukrainian journalism students to promote an understanding of international media systems in the participating countries.
It is organized by the Study Program Journalism & Media Management of the FHWien der WKW, University of Applied Sciences for Management & Communication together with the Ukrainian Catholic University Lemberg (UCU School of Journalism) and the OeAD Cooperation Centre Lemberg.
The project is financially supported by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF), the OeAD GmbH Vienna and the Cultural Section of the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs (BMEIA).
How is the International School of Multimedia Journalism organized?
20 students, 4 countries, 2 project weeks
The ISMJ is held throughout two project weeks, one week each in Vienna, Austria, and Lviv, Ukraine. The participants develop journalistic multimedia projects with different thematic focuses in tandem learning and with the support of experienced editors. In addition, the participants are offered talks, input lectures and discussion rounds with experts.
During both project weeks the participants work in the same groups, while taking country-specific characteristics into account, learning from each other and refining their own journalistic abilities.
The ISMJ Story – International Education in Multimedia Journalism
Since 2015 students from different European countries have been meeting in Vienna and Ukraine to exchange ideas and learn from each other. What began as an experiment has developed into a model for the future of multimedia journalism: a best practice example for the exchange of young journalists, good ideas and knowledge – and the start of a multitude of friendships.
The ISMJ Story was created on the occasion of the 5th year anniversary. It gives an in-depth report on how everything started and offers exclusive behind-the-scenes material on this one of a kind international project.

Looking back: past years and topics
Since it`s beginning, the International School of Multimedia Journalism has already covered many different topics. From Migration and Propaganda (2015) in the first year, followed by Good Governance (2016), Ecology (2017), Creative Industries (2018), Social Responsibility (2019), Super-Women: Women in Society (2020), Digitalization of the World of Work (2021), Media Under Pressure (2022) and Covering Climate Journalism (2023).
